TESOL Applied Linguistics Interest Section

Welcome to ALIS!

ALIS explores implications for the enhancement of language learning and communication. It seeks to do so through the promotion of discussion, the exchange of information, and joint research.

Statement of Purpose & Goals

ALIS looks at language as a communicative system from both theoretical and practical perspectives, applies research and theory to real world contexts, and explores implications for the enhancement of language learning and communication. It draws on linguistic disciplines (e.g., linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics), as well as on studies of a broad range of language phenomena.

We welcome your ideas for ALIS activities and resources. Please send a note to Virginia LoCastro, ALIS Chair, at locastro@mail.pue.udlap.mx.

History

Early leaders of the Section, Bernard Spolsky and Robert Kaplan, were faced with two challenges: defining the focus of the new group and acquiring members. The Applied Linguistics Interest Section of TESOL was one of the first and largest interest sections.
